Research peptide glossary: technical sheet and certificate of analysis terms
This glossary defines in technical language the terms that appear on a research peptide technical sheet and certificate of analysis: lyophilized powder, batch, HPLC, mass spectrometry, net content, counterion, cold chain, research grade and more. Each definition explains what the data point means and what it does not mean.
What do the terms on a product technical sheet mean?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Peptide | A short chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. |
| Reference | Each product in the catalog. It is not equivalent to a certified reference material in the metrological sense. |
| Reference code | Internal code the catalog uses to identify each presentation. |
| Presentation | Quantity declared per vial. It should not be assumed equal to the net peptide content; the batch documentation confirms that. |
| Lyophilized powder | Dry solid obtained by freezing a solution and removing the water by sublimation; the usual form in which synthetic peptides are supplied. |
| Vial | Glass container with a cap and seal in which the material is delivered. |
| Batch | A set of units produced and analyzed together, identified by a number. It is what ties a vial to its certificate. |
| Origin | Declared country of origin of the material. In this catalog, the United States. |
| Declared storage | Storage condition published on the technical sheet. It is a condition declared by the catalog, not an analytical datum of the batch. |
What do the terms on a certificate of analysis mean?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Certificate of analysis (COA) | Document that reports the results of the tests performed on a specific batch. |
| HPLC purity | Percentage of the main peak's area relative to the total peak area of a chromatogram, with a given method. |
| Chromatogram | Plot of the detector signal as a function of time; each peak is a component. |
| Retention time | The time at which a component leaves the column; it depends on the method. |
| Mass spectrometry (MS) | Technique that measures the mass of ionized molecules; on a COA it confirms that the observed mass matches the expected one. |
| Expected mass and observed mass | The expected mass is calculated from the sequence; the observed mass is measured by the instrument. They must match within tolerance. |
| Impurity | Any component other than the main compound: truncated peptides, peptides with deletions, synthesis residues, among others. |
| Net peptide content | Percentage of actual peptide in a weighed sample; excludes water and counterions. |
| Counterion | Ion that accompanies the peptide in the solid state, such as trifluoroacetate or acetate; it is part of the powder's total mass. |
| Water or moisture | Water present in the lyophilized powder; determined with a specific method, not with HPLC. |
| Endotoxins | Components of the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria; determined with a specific test. |
| Sterility | Absence of viable microorganisms, demonstrated with a specific test. A COA with HPLC and mass spectrometry does not certify it. |
What do the synthesis and quality terms mean?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solid-phase synthesis | The usual method for making synthetic peptides by adding amino acids one at a time onto a support. |
| Sequence | The order of the amino acids in the chain. |
| Truncated or deletion peptide | An impurity that lacks one or more amino acids relative to the expected sequence. |
| Isomer | A molecule with the same composition but a different structure; it can have the same mass as the main compound. |
| Research grade | Commercial framework for a laboratory material: with a certificate of analysis per batch and without Invima sanitary registration for use in humans or animals. It is not an official regulatory category. |
| Traceability | The ability to reconstruct the origin, batch, documents and path of a material. |
| Chain of custody | Continuous record of who held the material, when and under what conditions, starting at receipt. |
What do the logistics and regulation terms mean?
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cold chain | Set of packaging and transport conditions designed to keep a low temperature during shipping. |
| 2–8 °C | Refrigeration range that technical sheets declare as a storage condition. |
| Invima | National Institute for Drug and Food Surveillance, Colombia's health authority. |
| DIAN | National Directorate of Taxes and Customs, Colombia's customs authority. |
| Documentary validation | Review of the requester's details and stated purpose before a commercial response. |
| Institutional quotation | Informational document with reference prices and conditions; it is not a binding offer until confirmed in writing. |
| Transport waybill | Number with which the carrier identifies and tracks a shipment. |
| Replacement | Free shipment of a damaged, incomplete or wrong product, reported within 48 hours after delivery. |
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between purity and net content?
- HPLC purity compares the main compound with the other detected signals; net content compares the peptide with the total mass of the sample, including water and counterions. They are two different measurements, and a COA may carry only the first.
- Is purity the same as activity?
- No. Purity describes the composition of the sample; biological activity requires a functional assay and cannot be inferred from the COA.
- What is a batch and why does it matter?
- It is the set of units produced and analyzed together. Its number ties the vial received to the certificate of analysis; without it, the document provides no traceability.
- What does research grade mean?
- That the material is marketed for technical, research or laboratory use, with a certificate per batch and without Invima sanitary registration for use in humans or animals.
- Does this glossary explain how to prepare or use the material?
- No. This site does not publish reconstitution or routes of administration. The glossary describes technical sheet and analytical documentation terms.
